SNEL Advances Kinshasa Power Network Upgrade With New 75 MVA Transformer Project

The National Electricity Company (SNEL SA) is intensifying efforts to modernize and strengthen electricity infrastructure across Kinshasa as part of its ongoing commitment to improving power reliability and expanding network capacity.

Technical teams, engineers and operational personnel remain actively engaged in field operations aimed at enhancing service delivery and addressing growing electricity demand in the capital. The utility continues to implement strategic infrastructure upgrades designed to improve network stability and reduce power interruptions for consumers.

As part of efforts to monitor progress and accelerate key projects, SNEL Director General Teddy Lwamba recently dispatched a senior delegation comprising the Director of Distribution for Kinshasa and members of his executive team to inspect ongoing works across several locations in the city.

The inspection began in the Binza Pigeon district, where technical crews are carrying out critical interventions on power distribution lines to reinforce the network and improve supply reliability. During the visit, officials reviewed project progress and encouraged field teams to maintain implementation momentum to ensure timely completion of the works.

The delegation also visited the RTNC Broadcasting Centre in Téléconsult, a strategic facility that requires a secure and uninterrupted electricity supply. The team assessed the performance and reliability of installed systems designed to guarantee continuous power delivery to the broadcasting infrastructure.

One of the most significant developments highlighted during the visit is the installation of a new 75 MVA transformer at the Makala High Voltage Substation located in the commune of Bumbu. The project is expected to deliver substantial improvements to electricity supply in several parts of Kinshasa, including Binza UPN, Binza Pigeon, Météo and surrounding communities.

Construction and installation activities are already underway, with commissioning anticipated in the coming weeks. Once operational, the transformer will significantly increase network capacity, improve voltage stability and strengthen the utility’s ability to meet rising electricity demand from residential, commercial and institutional consumers.

The new infrastructure forms part of SNEL’s broader strategy to modernize the national electricity grid and improve access to reliable energy services across the Democratic Republic of Congo.

By continuing to invest in network expansion, substation upgrades and distribution system improvements, SNEL aims to enhance operational efficiency while providing customers with more stable and dependable electricity supply.

The latest project underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure, supporting economic development and improving the quality of life for communities across Kinshasa.
