Kansanshi Mining Places Second in Zambia’s 2025 Inter-Company First Aid Competition, Showcasing Safety Excellence
Kansanshi Mining PLC secured a commendable second place at the 2025 Zambia Chamber of Mines Inter-Company First Aid Competition, underscoring its steadfast commitment to workplace health and safety.
The prestigious event was hosted by Mopani Copper Mines at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe under the theme “First Aid in a Digital World.” A total of 21 companies participated, showcasing advanced life-saving skills and innovative safety practices.
Despite the challenge of fielding an entirely new team—per regulations requiring defending champions to rotate participants—Kansanshi achieved an impressive score of 85%, finishing just behind Lumwana Mine, which took the top spot with 89%.
Teza Kasengele, Safety Manager at Kansanshi, praised the team’s achievement, highlighting the strength of the mine’s safety training programs.
“Coming second with a brand-new team demonstrates the effectiveness of our internal training systems. With only two experienced members and four newcomers, our team outperformed several seasoned competitors,” Kasengele stated.
He emphasized that Kansanshi’s approach to first aid is not limited to competitions—it is a core part of daily operations.
“Our mission is to ensure every employee is capable of responding swiftly and effectively in emergencies. First aid saves lives.
This result validates our efforts, but we won’t rest. Our focus now is to train more first-aiders across the site and aim for the top spot next year,” he added.
The event was officially opened by Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, who called on mining companies to embrace modern technologies for enhanced safety training.
“Mining houses must integrate digital tools into workplace safety. From mobile apps to real-time simulations, technology can transform first aid response and empower workers with critical skills,” the minister said.
Anthony Malenga, President of the Zambia Chamber of Mines, echoed these remarks, noting that the digital age offers powerful tools to elevate first aid preparedness, including mobile platforms, immersive simulations, and interactive training solutions.
